How to save money at the tolls (NY/NJ)

All of you probably painfully aware that car pool discount at all Hudson River crossings has gone away as the toll booths became cashless.

However, there is still one other way left to pay less at the tolls. It is a little known program called Port Authority Green Pass Discount Plan that is only available to eligible vehicles that have fuel efficiency of 45 MPG or more.

The Plan toll rate is $8.25 per trip. This is significantly cheaper than the regular rate of $13.75. You also receive a special 10% discount on all Thruway facilities.

What you may NOT realize is that you must call NY EZ PASS to apply for it. You will get you a new EZ Pass transponder (it is actually green) and a new account. NJ EZ pass accounts come with completely different plan that does not cover bridges and tunnels. So unless you only travel on NJ Turnpike or GSP you won’t get a lot of benefits there.

But this is not all. Another Clean Pass Program exists for Long Island motorists, Clean Pass is a program that allows eligible energy-efficient vehicles to use the Long Island Expressway HOV lanes, regardless of the number of occupants in the vehicle.

Electric cars are automatically qualify but few hybrids and hybrid-electric are also eligible, full list is here
